07986 475743 | 01772 439046The debilitating condition Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) affects up to 8 million people in the UK, and the medical profession are still unable to define a specific cause.
Around 50% of sufferers report that their symptoms started close to a stressful period in their lives, such as a divorce, moving house, suddenly losing a job, or bereavement. Many people also believe that their IBS is caused by an allergy to specific foods, as eating a meal often triggers the symptoms.
Irritable bowel syndrome is one of the most common digestive disorders affecting the digestive tract, and the intestines in particular. It is a debilitating illness and affects people in very different ways. There are many symptoms and typically they include abdominal pain, cramps, constipation, diarrhoea, bloating and vomiting.
Along with those, IBS can also cause a great deal of discomfort and distress, leaving some people unable work, unable to attend social and family events or gatherings, it can even affect the distances a person is willing to travel. Making journey times and travel plans a nightmare.
Of course if you suffer from IBS you know this already, and you know first hand how intense it can be, and how it can cause significant disruption to your normal daily life.
With IBS the natural squeezing motions of the intestines moves too fast or too slowly, which causes the symptoms. These symptoms can become worse when stress is a factor in their life. Some practitioners see IBS as a symptom of other events such as stress which triggers off the cramps and spasms in the bowel.
What you may be unaware of is that hypnotherapy is regarded as one of the key therapies to help improve the quality of life for its sufferers. In a recent article in the March 2010 edition of the British Medical Journal,Professor Roland Valori says that:
hypnosis puts the mind in a relaxed state which eases stress and anxiety, two big contributors to gastrointestinal problems. He found hypnotherapy not only eases the symptoms of IBS but can clear up symptoms completely in some patients.
Hypnotherapy can be used in several ways:
The result of this, is that you start to sleep better, causing you to feel more refreshed and full of life, any aches and pains will disapear, and you will be able to recognise your responses and deal with them quickly and easily
It is important to discuss this first with your doctor. Although hypnotherapy has proven to be extremely effective for treating irritable bowel syndrome, IBS is still classed as a medical condition. If you think you might have IBS then the first thing to do is visit your doctor to get their diagnosis and advice. If your doctor agrees that you have IBS then hypnotherapy could really help you take back control of your life.
Typically treatment is between one to five sessions. The number of sessions depends on how quickly you respond to hypnosis, which will be evident after session one.
